Bulyanhulu spends over 4bn/- on development projects
This was said in the National Assembly
here yesterday by the Deputy Minister for Energy and Minerals, Dr
Mendrad Kalemani when responding to a question by Msalala MP, Mr Ezekiel
Maige (CCM).
The legislator had wanted to know how
much has been offered by the mine to support development projects to
communities surrounding the firm. He also wanted to know why Bulyanhulu
Gold Mine has failed to implement its project through Msalala Council
.
In response, Dr Kalemani said last year,
the mine through ‘Development Fund’ disbursed 1.98 million US dollars
(about 4.4bn/-) to support various projects, especially in
infrastructure. He said Msalala and Nyangw’ale districts were the
beneficiaries.
He further said that so far, the company
has employed 1,168 locals in which 517 out of them come from
communities surrounding the mine. The company has been spending on
social infrastructure to drive wealth creation in communities by
providing support for entrepreneurs, enhancing agribusinesses and
funding soccer.
